Report
A 97 from Stokeinteignhead opener Stuart Vallance ensured a victory for the home side in Stoke Gabriel’s opening pre-season friendly. The game handed debuts to Under 15’s bowler Declan Hinchcliffe and a returning Andy Coles – who returns after spells at both Paignton and Brixham. The team saw a mixture of youth and experience, with 6 colts, and 5 of the older 2nd XI players.
Captain Jeff Baker lost the toss and his team were put in, in windy conditions on a pitch high up upon a hill. As with last season, there was a shower of rain after only a few overs, which left Stoke to bat the remainder of their innings with a slow, damp outfield. Soon after the break opener Malcolm Coleman got on the wrong end of a running mix up, and was on his way back to the Pavilion for 1. Baker was joined by keeper Alex Bertram, together the pair put on 47 before the skipper was caught for 40. Bertram was joined by Coles, who had a short and ... lets say uncomfortable time at the crease before being swiftly removed for 2.
Bertram followed Coles back to the pavilion soon after for a well earned 16 leaving the visiting side on 81/4. Last years 2nd XI captain Clive Burnell was joined in the middle by Colts coach Doug Ansley. Burnell earned himself a patient 18, whilst Ansley earned himself a, not so patient 34. Now, being a Colts coach, you’d expect Doug to be a reasonably conventional batsman. But I don’t expect the coaching manual has a page on winging the bat towards mid wicket early on in your innings – I guess the only shame was that the ball didn’t follow it. Both departed, and were followed by late runs from Giselle Ansley (16*) and Adam Deakin (3*). At the end of the 40 overs, Stoke were poised on 156/5.
The home side returned to bat after the interval, in more batsman friendly conditions. Mike Perkin shared the bowling opening duties with Declan Hinchcliffe. And it was Perkin to get the opening wicket, getting Harvey trapped LBW for a duck. Unfortunately , any momentum gained from the opening prize was quickly lost as Vallance got to work hammering bowlers through the leg side – there may have been a marathon going on in London today , but that was a mere sprint compared to the yards bowler Mike Perkin had to cover in the field. First change Bob Bamber was on the receiving end of Vallance’s early attack, taking 21 off his two overs. Stokeinteignhead passed 50, the Vallance himself passed the half century mark soon after. Even with wickets falling steadily, Vallance maintained his offence and the home side homed in the on the target with time to spare, not before he himself was trapped LBW by Clive Burnell on 97. With overs to spare, Stokeinteignhead ended on 158/5.
